Dr. Mario P. Vecchi is Senior Vice President, Chief Technology Officer of the Road Runner Group (former Excalibur Group), a Time Warner venture dedicated to the technical and business development of the Road RunnerTM broadband Internet data services to home personal computers, using multimegabit per second cablemodems over the broadband hybrid fiber/coax network. Road RunnerTM is an end-to-end enabling infrastructure, based on TCP/IP and related Internet technologies, that supports rich multimedia applications to home PCs. Dr. Vecchi was one the the founders in 1994 of this new business unit, and has been leading the technical activities from the first definition of the product and its technology, through an initial field trial in 1995, to the commercial deployment in over 12 cities to more than 2 million homes passed and more than 30 thousand paying customers (January 1998 numbers). The Road Runner service continues to grow rapidly, and the recent announcement of the merging of efforts with the Media One Express activities will further accelerate the expansion. Dr. Vecchi is interested not only in the deployment of high-speed data applications to residential PCs, but also in the integration with telecommunications and interactive video entertainment, based on open, scalable and extensible distributed systems architectures.  

Dr. Vecchi had been Vice President, Network Engineering at Time Warner Cable, Engineering and Technology, Englewood, CO from 1994 to 1996, working on the Orlando Full Service Network Project. He worked at Cable Labs for a short interval as Vice President, Network Architecture Design and Development. Dr. Vecchi was at Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), Morristown, NJ. from 1986 to 1993, working in the Applied Research area. Prior to that, he was the Head of the Semiconductors Laboratory of the Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Cientificas, Chairman of the Electrical Engineering Department at the Universidad Metropolitana in Caracas, Venezuela and he was a visiting scientist at the IBM Watson Research Center. In 1982, Dr. Vecchi was the founder and Managing Director of XYNERTEK C.A., a venture company that designed and manufactured microcomputing systems in Venezuela. He has published more than 60 technical and research papers.  

Dr. Vecchi holds Ph.D., E.E., and S.M. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, received his B.S. degree from Cornell University and the professional engineering degree from the Universidad Central de Venezuela. Distinctions he has received include the Order Andres Bello in Venezuela. He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and Member of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers
